MI455X decisions fail when AI product teams treat a published datasheet as a bookable mid-market node. We all know AMD documents a serious MI400 HBM4 envelope for frontier and Helios-class designs. Your job is to separate planning diligence from a production RFQ you can place this quarter.
When MI455X belongs on the roadmap
MI455X belongs on the roadmap when 432 GB HBM4, Helios or EAM framing, and frontier-scale needs are real planning requirements. Keep AMD’s launch-date statement as vendor guidance. It is not a mid-market on-demand fill.
Dual-track planning for this year and next
Run a dual-track brief. Track one: can MI355X, MI350X, MI325X, or MI300X hit this year’s SLAs? Track two: which workloads truly need MI455X’s HBM4 and Helios-class topology? If track one is healthy, keep MI455X on the roadmap. Fund nearer Instinct capacity for production.
Map these three facts before you RFQ
Write three facts before any planning RFQ leaves the building.
- Roadmap role versus nearer MI350-series capacity
- Software path for ROCm day-zero on Helios or EAM BOMs
- Allocation calendar with partner-named windows only
Soft calendars stay on the planning memo. Hard go-lives need a nearer production substitute plus a dated reopen trigger.
Adjacent options without a FOMO upgrade
Compare adjacent options with the same brief. MI430X shares the MI400 HBM4 class with stronger FP64 framing. MI355X holds nearer commercial density for production RFQs. MI350X is the CDNA 4 path for high-throughput production inference. Plan MI455X. Do not treat the datasheet as inventory.
Term shape, utilization, and kill criteria
To right-size a multi-year GPU contract, spot term traps: commitments sized beyond training and production needs and sold as early Helios access, placeholder SKUs, and roadmap slides treated as inventory.
- Prefer written SKU identity, attributed windows, and exit paths.
- Get rates and ship windows from dated, attributed proposals.
- Set kill criteria for the planning track: a model-size or rack-scale proof, and a date that forces a nearer-SKU RFQ if partner windows slip.
One brokerage note: a published datasheet is not the same thing as a bookable node.
When you are ready, talk to a GPU sourcing advisor. Share the dual-track brief, and we’ll route a warm request to the right TSD path for a right-sized proposal.
