MI300X decisions fail when AI product teams jump to a newer Instinct SKU before ROCm is ready. We all know CDNA 3 MI300X is a mature Instinct floor for mid-market AI work. Your job is to decide whether 192 GB HBM3 fits this year’s production path.
When MI300X is the right floor
MI300X is the right floor when 192 GB HBM3 and a proven ROCm stack meet measured SLAs with known delivery. Keep it when Infinity Fabric topology and region are the real constraints. Treat newer Instinct labels as pilots only after the floor is stable.
Dual-track planning for this year and next
Run a dual-track brief. Track one: can MI300X hit measured SLAs on a named ROCm day-zero path? Track two: which workloads truly need MI325X memory or CUDA peers next cycle? If track one is healthy, keep MI300X as the production floor. Fund step-ups as controlled pilots.
Map these three facts before you RFQ
Write three facts before any RFQ leaves the building.
- ROCm stack readiness for your frameworks and runbooks
- Memory fit after sharding and checkpointing on 192 GB
- Calendar hardness for go-live dates
Soft calendars favor on-demand or short reserved blocks. Hard go-lives need a reserved floor plus a documented burst path.
Adjacent options without a FOMO upgrade
Compare adjacent options with the same brief. MI325X wins when 256 GB HBM3E is the binding constraint. H100 and H200 remain fair CUDA peers when Hopper ops are already the house standard. Upgrade when the bottleneck is real.
Term shape, utilization, and kill criteria
To right-size a multi-year GPU contract, spot term traps: commitments sized beyond training and production needs and sold as priority, opaque substitution, and quotes that omit platform BOM or interconnect.
- Pressure-test utilization. A half-idle eight-GPU node is not a savings story.
- Pair reserved floors with on-demand overflow and checkpointing discipline.
- Set kill criteria for any MI300X-to-newer pilot: a success threshold, and a date that forces a stay on MI300X if delivery slips.
One brokerage note: teams that sleep better keep production on qualified ROCm while newer SKU paperwork clears.
