B200 decisions fail when AI product teams treat scarcity as a strategy. We all know Blackwell is a high-performing GPU for the majority of AI initiatives. Your job is to fund B200 only where this year’s models need its memory and throughput—not where Hopper still meets the SLA.
When B200 is the right floor
B200 is the right floor when Blackwell memory and throughput clear a measured need with a delivery path you can document. Keep Hopper production stable while you validate. Treat rack-scale Grace Blackwell as a separate program, not an automatic upgrade.
Dual-track planning for this year and next
Run a dual-track brief. Track one: can Hopper (H100 or H200) hit this year’s SLAs with known delivery? Track two: which workloads truly require B200 next cycle? If track one is healthy, source B200 as a controlled pilot. Do not rewrite the estate on scarcity vibes.
Map these three facts before you RFQ
Write three facts before any RFQ leaves the building.
- Blackwell validation risk for your frameworks and migration plan
- Interconnect and topology for the HGX or DGX shape quoted
- Delivery calendar hardness for go-live dates
Soft calendars favor short reserved blocks or pilots. Production go-lives need dated provider commitments and a Hopper fallback.
Adjacent options without a FOMO upgrade
Compare adjacent options with the same brief. H100 and H200 remain sober production floors when Hopper still meets the SLA. GB200 NVL72 is rack-scale only when the full NVLink domain is real. Upgrade when the bottleneck is real.
Term shape, utilization, and kill criteria
To right-size a multi-year GPU contract, spot term traps: commitments sized beyond training and production needs, opaque forward commitments without milestones, and quotes that omit networking, storage, or egress.
- Pressure-test utilization. A scarce allocation that sits idle is not a strategy.
- Pair reserved floors with on-demand overflow and checkpointing.
- Set kill criteria: a success threshold, and a date that forces a stay on Hopper if delivery slips.
Leave deeper provider checklists to the FAQ. List configuration, topology, and compliance needs in your requirements for the TSD.
One brokerage note: the teams that sleep better still train next month on Hopper while Blackwell paperwork clears.
